July 19, 2013 at 6:42 AMI have experienced this first hand many years ago -- I helped organize a fundraising for chinese school program, thru the "hope" project.
When I was dealing with officials I saw first hand how they where trying to make money out of the event, instead of helping -- it really made me sad -- however I also saw something extremely positive and that was the willingness of the general chinese population for helping
I organized a bicycle trip, lasting a month driving from Xiamen university to Beijing and along the way on every big city we went around talking about the "hope" project which we had a chinese company called "PIN" donate some money to -- all in all it went ok, thanks to the fact that everybody was willing to work around the few bad "seeds"
When I think of China I think about the people I met on this trip -- people that themselves needed help, their willingness to give -- fantastic people - it made me truly fall in love with China

June 27, 2013 at 8:20 AMInteresting dialog - I guess it makes sense to fire her, since you do not what her to be unhappy and at the same time take care of your kids, however is this typical in other types of jobs? if so then DO NOT ASK for a raise in China - best way perhaps is to find another job and say Im moving - perhaps then they will ask you to stay for a raise ;-)
