Posted on: The New Site and the Guided Plan
June 5, 2008 at 3:13 PMI have had a similar experiance with my first lesson, I'm probably not as good as light/Luke (nice name), but it was like how do you say... hello/ the time/ what to day is/ good morning/ good afternoon/I can speak english etc. about 20mins.
My first 5 lessons (I usually study one a week never mind FIVE)
1.Newbie - Who's that girl?
2.Newbie - Working Time
3.Newbie - Family Ties
4.Newbie - What time is it?
5.Newbie - Time to Go
So I have to step my game up. I think I'm getting swept up in the community rather than the learning, so back to some serious learning. I would hate to be having a lesson and muddling through not really knowing what to say. Inital thoughts are I really like the idea of guided, it's not too expensive and the 'tailored' curriculum is given to you.
Posted on: I Don't Have the Strength (... 不动)
June 3, 2008 at 10:01 PMOkay, going to try... (these are probably wrong)
我吃不動(wo3 chi1 budong4) I can't be bothered to eat?????
我吃得動(wo3 chi1 dedong4) I want to eat more????
我坐不動 (wo3 zuo4 budong4) I don't have the strength to sit down
Probably my english translation is bad, but I had a go. But this does sound like a great construction to know when I have better Mandarin

June 1, 2008 at 8:49 PMhey!!!
Why, in the expansion sentence 真的很對不起 (zhende hen duibuqi) there is 真的 and 很?
Do you need both. Sorta like saying I'm really very sorry. Or can you do without one or the other??

Posted on: Regional Accents Part II
May 26, 2008 at 10:05 AMThese lessons are great. On the program Chinese School (On the BBC in the UK) there was a girl from a province (can't remember the name) and she went to Beijing for a three day course on broadcasting. the people there said they couldn't understand her and even asked her if she was speaking Mandarin!!, the only difference was that she spoke quite nasally when the Beijing were more throaty, when she went back home she was told she spoke posh! Please can we have more examples of regional accents, and maybe some Shanghainese, that would be lovely!

June 17, 2008 at 8:09 AMIf I learn anything from this lesson, let it be 急死我了
(I know I should learn the rest but I love these 死 phrases)
The lessons are getting very good, love the noises and the acting, like listening to a short radio play.
