The first expansion sentence:

我帮你问一下。Wŏ bāng nĭ wèn yíxià. I'll help you for a moment.

has me a little confused. To me, it actually seems to be saying "I'll help you ask".

Could someone sort out my confusion.

My own knowledge on the end of the Pacific War is a bit sketchy. The US chose the bomb over invasion. Was there much consideration at the time of a 3rd option - to strangle Japan's supply. Was this a feasible option?

I am not defending the US here - I agree they have no business sticking their nose in so far from home - but your suggestions as to their motivation are the words of someone who has only a sketchy idea of history.

I'm guessing you are a full-on conspiracy theorist. Tell me, was Diana murdered?  Did the US bring down the Twin Towers themselves?

And you still haven't answered my question - who rebuilt Vietnam? Did the US "rebuild (Vietnam) with enormous profit, all the time telling everyone how great (they were) because (they were) helping this poor country?" - to use your words.

In the Expansion Sentence:

没有人接球。 Méiyŏu rén jiēqiú. Nobody returned the ball.

I see that 接球 is translated as 'catch the ball', while the sentence talks about 'returning' the ball.

My online dictionary (Yellowbridge) translates 接球 as "to receive a served ball (volleyball, tennis etc); to catch a ball thrown by sb".

Surely 'receiving' and 'returning' are 2 different things. You can receive a ball without necessarily returning it.

Is someone able to explain this situation?

I'm aware of that meaning also. In that case suicide is a transitive verb. Merriam-Webster gives the meaning here as 'to put (onself) to death', which perhaps doesn't convey the meaning in its entirety.

I have been referring to the intransitive use of the verb. Merriam-Webster's definition is "to commit suicide". So this dictionary equates the verb "suicide" with the phrase "commit suicide".

Thus Merriam-Webster makes a clear distinction between your usage and mine.

"The Oxford Pocket Dictionary of Current English 2009" does not give your transitive usage (which I believe is American English only, but I may be wrong there), but after the definition of the noun says:

• v. [intr.] intentionally kill oneself: she suicided in a very ugly manner.

I believe a definition from a current, reputable English dictionary should end this discussion.

Thanks for that Connie. I always appreciate help from Changye, but clearly his last 2 examples were incorrect. Will you be correcting the pinyin in the expansion sentence?

By the way, I have been entering tone markers by typing into Word, then pasting here. Is there a way of entering them directly?  What about the characters themselves?
