September 15, 2007 at 7:33 AMWell, that last paragraph explains a little why a Chinese friend from Shanghai, but going to school in my hometown of Boise, ID, who I had dinner with before coming to Scotland had no embarrassment about just that at dinner. I was just talking about western vs. Chinese medine in general, and if she used western medice. Right out she said that Chinese medicine helps her during her period from being uncomfortable and acne, etc., and since she had run out of her medicine from leaving China a year ago, she was such-and-such problems and couldn't find any western medicine that can do the same thing. While I wasn't uncomfortable talking about such an issue, it did kind of take me off guard coming out of the blue at dinner.

Posted on: To Bow or Not to Bow
August 22, 2007 at 5:36 PMInteresting how 躬 (to bow) has 弓 (bow, as in bow and arrow), both gong1, as English also uses both (same spelling but different pronunciation, Chinese using different characters yet same pronunciation). Goulniky mentioned how 弓 is the phonetic part of 躬, which is true, but isn't it also the meaning as well? At first I thought it was a coincendence that both characters (as well as both languages) use the same word for both kinds of "bow", but then again, I guess the bowing of a human and a bow-in-hand have the same shape. Easier way to remember this not-so-common characters. 鞠: The first character of 鞠躬, 鞠, means "to rear, to bring up"... I believe is made up of 革cow-hide (leater, like in 鞋 shoes) and the phonetic radical that 菊 (chrysanthemum) also has... so...uh... there is no easy way to remember why we have this character! (I am guessing that those we rear/bring up are to bow to us, the elders... or they make good leather?) And thanks Changye for liking stupid guys like me (now if I could just find a girl who felt the same way.... ha ha). Hmm, no ship or violin here... they both went down on the Titanic.

August 16, 2007 at 6:27 AMUmm...question in the back: Is it possible for emails to be sent to us when Movie Madness is also posted, and right when it is posted? I seem to be not getting to CPod, let alone Movie Madness, fast enough to see these before a winner is made. Just a suggestion. ;) -R
