May 4, 2008 at 7:53 PMBazza, I think that's a word CPod made up...ha ha. I actually at first thought this was about a repair man that fixes mobile phones! I think the official term is "annoying guy who goes around shouting from his cart that he wants your broken things..." [I never actually knew they wanted to fix things too...at least not in Tianjin]
Seriously though, I could only think of a famous movie in which there is such a guy, collecting junk anyway, not fixing. That movie is 《有话好好说》. In the scripts I found, he is just called 民工 (civilian worker), on IMDB, in English, he is called "junk pedaler."

May 4, 2008 at 7:13 PM我有一个问题: 最后一句话是: 都是这个价 我看了英文的翻译之前,我以为"都"提到"all microwaves are this price"可是英文翻译是"That's the price everywhere." 可能差不多一样的意思,可是想知道"都"什么时候是"每个地方/到处"的意思,什么时候是"all of them"的意思? Just wondering how to know what "all都" is referring to as in Chinese it is sometimes hard to tell... or does it matter? 以明

May 3, 2008 at 2:39 PMwhere are you guys getting this "yīgè guàn de kělè" grammar? I never seen "gè" followed by another measure word, and a measure word followed by a "de". It is NOT like in English when we say "A can OF coke" Just say "yíguàn kělè" (a can coke) otherwise it will sound very funny, to myself and to Chinese people too. So: 一瓶啤酒 yìpíng píjiǔ a bottle beer 一罐可乐 yíguàn kělè a can coke

May 3, 2008 at 2:33 PMJenny, is that campaign just in China? Or throughout the world? Good lesson, BTW. In my 5 years in China I watched Diet Coke slowly move from the stores that carried foreign foods (Carrefour, small but expensive food stores, etc.) to convenient stories all over the place. Since I grew up drinking Diet Coke in my household, it was very nice to see when I wanted to grab something cold very quick... and this was in Shenyang and Tianjin... not the big cities of foreigners. :)

May 2, 2008 at 2:48 PMvery cool Dear Amber... helped me understand Crosstalks a little better as I never really understood what methods they used to be "funny", even though I have seen a live performance in a tea house... hard to understand what they are saying, let alone what is funny. I will miss week-long holidays in China, but maybe that means if I do use a holiday to visit Chinesepod in Shanghai again, more chance people will be around, and that if I skip class a few days, I will get to see the factory!

May 1, 2008 at 10:42 AM@light487: Just to correct you a little light487, if you don't mind, the correct tone for 您 is nín (2nd tone) not nǐn (3rd tone, which is the tone of 你nǐ) My guess about your question on family hierarchy is that 您 is used mostly for people outside the family in formal situations, like at work or at school with your teacher, strangers, and elderly people. Maybe children will use 您 to talk to their grandparents, but I'm not sure about that, so I need some professionals to clue us in on that one. As for bowing, it is said that Chinese slightly bow, but my Chinese friends say they just shake hands.

Some vocab to make it easy to remember:
img = image
src = source
width sets the image to 300 pixels wide, which I recommend so not to leave the image at its original size which might really mess up this page with a huge image. However, if the image is small, like the one I used above, you can remove the width="300" part or change the number.
If you want us to see the original image by clicking on the small image, you can put the <a> link tag around it like this:
<a href="URL TO IMAGE HERE" target="_blank"><img src="URL TO IMAGE HERE" width="300"></a>
Example:
<a href="http://chinesepod.com/images/inner_logo.gif" target="_blank"><img src="http://chinesepod.com/images/inner_logo.gif" width="300"></a>

target="_blank" will make sure when we click on the image, it will open it in a new window so we don't leave this discussion. Make sure you change the "URL TO IMAGE" in both the <a> and <img> tags.
