August 6, 2011 at 9:34 AMHmmm, when I input 手机多少 into the MDBG translator it returned "phone number." Are you sure 你手机多少来着 does not mean "What did you say your phone number was", as chakma_ugur's Chinese friend was quoted as explaining?
By the way, you have a typo at the end of the sentence; should be 你的手机号码几号。 Thanks for pointing up this different word usage. I tend to think of 几号 ( jīhào ) as referring to items in a series, like a day of the month or a hotel room, but it could also refer to a phone number.

August 6, 2011 at 9:20 AMdskulinska,
( 能 ) néng refers to ability. 可以 ( kěyǐ ) is a little broader, translated alternatively as "can" or "may." I would have said "不能" in this case, but since the context is clear enough " 不可以 " should be acceptable. I think the "rule" you cite, while it might be technically correct, is not necessarily widely followed by native speakers.

August 6, 2011 at 8:59 AMcracked me up; I was thinking same -- better get used to those intrusive "personal" questions early on. I think there's a podcast on that somewhere.

August 6, 2011 at 8:48 AMI used SKYPE on my iPhone over WiFi in the airport to talk to my CPod teacher on-line, no problem (not counting the ambient airport noise.)

August 5, 2011 at 12:35 PMI ran the graph, but can't figure out how to paste it here. Not surprisingly, the use of comrade seems to roughly coincide with the cultural revolution, and drops off sharply in recent decades. No data after 2008, and not evidence to suggest it coming back in vogue as a term for homosexual, but obviously it depends what corpus you are using. Thanks for the fascinating resource. I am going to forward it to my friend who is a linguist and professor.

August 5, 2011 at 12:23 PMI assume that's not specific to 美女 as a term of address. If it were, I would say plot the graph against "comrade" (同志) and see what you get. I'll go have a look at the site, thanks.

August 6, 2011 at 3:49 PMJenny, Is Nexus One not 3G-capable, or you don't have 3G service? I have not tried SKYPE from my iPhone over a cellular network. 4G is rolling out in the US where I live now, which I hope iPhone5 will support.
By the way, why no news on upgrades for the CPod mobile app? Its a great app and I use it all the time, but it still needs a lot of work.
