Hi tvan

Thanks for a ton of cultural background info. Who knew that dried pork and pickled vegetables were good for babies that aren't even a twinkle in their daddy's eye?

Hi raychenon

Your question reminds me of an old American folk song, "Hold the Woodpile Down." Doc Watson sang it memorably:

"Book-keeper swallowed a nickel a day,

Run him 'most crazy, so they say.

Now listen real good and I'll tell you what it's all about

It's a nickel in and a nickel out--hold the woodpile down."   ;-)

The 嘛 shows that something is obvious or goes without saying. It makes a statement a bit more friendly.

Have any poddies read the poem Ozymandias by P. B. Shelley? It's worth keeping in mind when we start talking about superpowers and glory.

Hi calkins

Generally in China, 外卖 includes delivery (and you don't have to tip the poor guy!)

Thanks for your examples, miantiao.

Hi shangli

This show is supposed to be accessible to poddies at all levels of Chinese proficiency. If you are interested in pure Chinese lessons, please have a look at the Advanced and Media sections.

Hi ai1pi2

Ha, I have a similar mug, except it is for Bailey's Irish Cream (and it does have the Chinese characters). I got it at Karaoke about a year ago.

The phrases are cute, but some of them are a bit of a stretch.

Hi all

"So-called scholars" rely on evidence in making their claims. Any true scholar will reconsider his or her theory if presented with convincing evidence to the contrary. Scholars make conclusions to fit the data.

This is very different from belief, which means rejecting competing world-views, even in the face of evidence. Believers interpret the data to fit their conclusions.

If I believed that a flying spaghetti monster created the universe, I would be delighted to see that the character 条 in 面条 (noodles) appears to have noodly appendages.

The universe is a big, complicated place. There is enough room for scholarship and belief. But let's not confuse the two.

Hi yankees,

I don't know what you're talking about. Both lessons were about slang, but the content is completely different.

Hi monica5

According to the Chinese wikipedia, RSS is 简易资讯聚合 jiǎnyì zīxùn jùhé.

But I have also heard Chinese refer to it just as RSS.
