June 25, 2011 at 2:24 PMHa! I hadn't thought about that kind of leave, even though I said it right there in my story. But there is a much clearer distinction and I would expect a different word to be used for leaving something behind. My question remains: What about when a guest leaves your home to return to their own. As they are a friend, they will most likely come again. She even still has the key. (Always good to have a couple extra keys floating around among friends.)
Oh! I think I just answered my own question! I should say: "她回家时候。。。“
Is there also a way to say it using some form of "leave"?

June 25, 2011 at 2:12 AMOnce I said to a friend “我离开家时候什么什么什么” and her eyes got big, then she said "You mean when you left your house today? You shouldn't use this word. You scared me that you were moving away!" She said I should use 出门。
Which makes a great deal of sense and is very easy. But! it leads me to a question.
I had some friends stay with me for a couple of weeks because their own house was too full of guests. When they moved back to their own house they left some food because it was too mafan to take along. It was tasty. When I told the story to others about my bounty (one jar of soybeans soaked in vinegar) I said "她离开时候什么什么什么“
Was this an appropriate use of 离开? I am not sure it was.

The "uo" is nice. But the whole word is a nice combination of hard and soft sounds.

June 20, 2011 at 9:34 AMOh, and I don't know if they call it 矮的, but it is called a "short" in English. Also, in China I order a cappuccino just because I like saying 卡布奇诺。This is also why I like Greek food. Misithra. Tsadziki. Baklava. How can one resist?

June 20, 2011 at 8:56 AM呵呵，That is my actual drink in America. Really? two shots of espresso with a bit of steamed milk equals a cuppa? I haven't ordered it here.... but I have had pointless conversations about nonfat milk, and cannot find out what to properly call it. I have given up. But I did find lowfat at the store! Yay for fancy eastern cities! I've decided I don't order fancy coffee enough to worry about it. Not that I ever worried about it.... but I do need to keep my 小女人 status and not turn into a 母老虎。
By the way, you can order a meatless hamburger at McD's.... not sure about bunless. Not that I would, why bother? But the meatless McMuffin is pretty good! They don't show it on the menu either, but are quite happy to oblige. I found out about the meatless hamburger when I tried to order a meatless McMuffin at 10:01.

June 20, 2011 at 8:13 AMsmall non-sequitur... They don't tell you this or show it on the menu, but you can order a "small" at Starbucks. I used to order it all the time. A double short non-fat latte. No one would bat an eyelash. Hmmm.... how do you say that? 一杯免油牛奶俩量拿铁，矮的。

July 2, 2011 at 2:10 PMI feel like 大风 is a noun, "gale" I suppose is the best english translation, while 风很大 is a description of the wind.
Perhaps not a huge distinction, but a distinction nonetheless.
