July 26, 2011 at 7:47 AMA scalded cat would be afraid of any water, even of cold water, without checking the temperature first. Surely cold water resembles hot water even more than a rope resembles a snake.
That is the point of all of these sayings. Bad experienced cause fear even when there is no danger.

July 18, 2011 at 3:29 AMI've seen vendors packing their things into the area under the stairs to my building. The space isn't tall enough to stand up in, and is sometimes pretty stinky due to the wet market on the first floor. There were some of the bike vendor's bikes in there too. Certainly no room to keep a big wooden cart on your own porch. But seeing it was certainly an "aha!" moment.

July 18, 2011 at 3:08 AMThe passive voice is discouraged in English classes, at least overuse is discouraged, but I don't believe the same is true in Chinese. Many sentences use the passive voice that wouldn't in English and no one gives it a second thought. Embrace the 被 I say.

July 13, 2011 at 3:08 AMThe CDC is 疾病预防控制中心. They were trying to get everyone to plan for disasters... no one really wants to think about hurricanes and earthquakes. But zombies are fun. People will go to the site and laugh. Then, hopefully, put together a go-bag and have an escape plan. I thought it was clever. A good way to get people to think about real disasters without scaring them too much.

July 12, 2011 at 2:32 PMThe US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention take the zombie apocalypse seriously, and so should you. Disaster preparedness... It's everyone's job.

July 11, 2011 at 9:04 AM有人吗?yǒurénma is a very useful question, and not just for the door. I say it all the time in crowded restauraunts where you have to find your own seat. In that context it means “Is anyone sitting here?"

July 8, 2011 at 2:51 PM一球冰淇淋 bobs around in the hot coffee like a tropical island in the Pacific.
Now I want to watch Doctor Dolittle (Rex Harrison, not Eddie Murphy)... Spidermonkey Island is the only island I know of the "bobs around" 呵呵

July 5, 2011 at 5:04 AMkimiik's stats were people registered with the consulate, so I assume unregistered means not registered with the consulate. There is no law you have to register with the consulate that I am aware of, but it is a good idea in case of an emergency.
As for registering with the police, there is no reason not too if you have a current visa.... except that it is mafan and easy to forget to do. I got stopped one day and asked for my passport. Now, I carry my passport every day. Every day. But that day I had switched bags and forgot... I got taken to the police station (the other guy they caught passportless drove us there) and they noticed I had also forgotten to register with the police last time I entered. So long story short I was fined ¥50 and told to go register. They were very nice about it. But I am not sure if the fine was for not carrying my passport or for not registering with the police.
