My favorite is Dagoba's xocolatl 74% with cacao nibs and chilies. Probably because the name is reminiscent of the exilic home of my Chinese grammar teacher, Yoda. "mmm! Feel dark chocolate's force, you will!"... "嗯! 感觉黑巧克力的力,你会!“

hmmm..... I was able to access sinosplice just now. Maybe it was a temporary problem?

I've seen 太牛了 tàiniúle before... but cannot figure out what it means. Too cowed? What is the proper usage of 太牛了?

@bodawei

"clips" are the old school cages that go over a pedal so you can pull up as well as push down. Clipless pedals are the ones that, well, kind of snap on to the bottom on your cycling shoe. The fact that they are more clip-like than the the clips they replace caused me much confusion when I learned about them as a kid. So I guess a regular pedal is neither clipped nor clipless. Perhaps they are "aclip" pedals. Yes, that is what they shall be.

@ miantiao

You can make a mud guard with half of a soda bottle. Not pretty, but cheap!

@sebire

That is hilarious! When I think back on the first days of my clipless pedals, I feel retrospectively more secure...

Anyone know the word for clipless pedals?

@ bodawei,

I think carlos-in-irvine,china means this kind of helmet. Rather impractical for a bicycle in my opinion.

@wenjong

I think bodawei means this kind of motorcycle helmet:

ah! bodawei, I understand.

I think you are probably right. And helmets are compulsory in the US, too. But 1) who is going to check on off-roaders? Not many police out in the woods. 2) If city cyclists are also taking more risks because they are wearing helmets as the law requires, I think that is an issue.

I think proper training is far more conducive to safety than any piece of equipment anyway. And maybe seperating bicyle and car traffic. But I am afraid my eutopian society where only bikes are used for trips within city limits somehow not going to happen.

True bicycles go fast, but the kind of head injury is different than a construction site... heavy things don't tend to fall directly onto cyclists. Bicycle helmets have been well tested for the types of accidents cyclist are prone to. The plastic on a bike helmet is purely cosmetic. It is the styrofoam that protects. However! They are not tested improperly worn, as many are. Very dangerous. More dangerous than no helmet. And studies (that I can't site right now... sorry) indicate that cyclists wearing a helmet may take risks that those who don't will not take. Resulting in some pretty nasty neck injuries. And neck injuries are more likely to paralyze or kill than a head injury.
