November 18, 2009 at 12:50 PMlily, I was teasing jes13 because he said "idear" instead of "idea". Idear is used in England and in some parts of the US, so is kind of an English form of 儿化。 My guess is they don't 儿化 those words in the north either... but I don't know. :-)

November 18, 2009 at 12:28 AMbodawei, pack-rat must be an Amercan phrase (it is an Amercan animal afterall.) But you are right, according to Wikipedia actual pack-rats will drop something in favor of something new... especally if the something new is shiney. Figurative pack-rats apparently will never get rid of anything. By the way, we also use the phrase for people who just have trouble giving stuff up, but not nearly to the degree in that last link.

I remember seeing 鸡蛋拉面 (jīdànlāmian egg noodles) on the menu so that must be it... they just left off the 番茄 （fānqié tomato.) It wasn't a soup or stir fried... it was served kind of like spaghetti with egg and tomato instead of spaghetti sauce. I did have the 汤 (tāng soup) yesterday. Maybe tomorrow I will have 青菜拉面 （qīngcàilāmiàn vegatable [cabbage probably?] noodles.) But I will let you have all the 牛肉 （niúròu beef.)

November 17, 2009 at 10:58 AMI had egg and tomato over 拉面 lāmiàn noodles today. What is it called? I almost became a menu stealer today, but the noodle place only had 4 tables and I want to eat there again. I am pretty sure they would recognize me! But I bet I could transcribe all the characters I would need to learn to know what each thing is. Does 青菜拉面 qīngcàilāmiàn usually have meat in it too, or only vegatables. How would I ask?

I like 不撤退就捣乱。Most people here have been very friendly and polite, but a phrase or two to deal with the rare problem would be useful! I thought about two tough ladies, too, but not really applicable in this situation.

Everyone has been willing to speak Chinese to me... even when it is clear they are talking above my level, so I am hopeful my language skills will improve appreciatively. Also, apparently my, shall we say, roman nose is 漂亮 (piao4liang pretty.）However, there is some bus/subway language that I need that has not yet been addressed on chinesepod. How do you say, "Back off or I will castrate you myself!" Mind you, I don't want profanity. Just a phrase that indicates I am quite willing to defend my own honor.
