November 29, 2009 at 5:56 PMIntersting... 上火 sounds a bit like the classical definition of "choleric" based on the four humors. An imbalance in the humors was believed to cause disease and foods with hot, cold, moist or dry qualities were used to rebalance the body. (The words "hot" for spicy and "dry" for wine are from this system.)

November 27, 2009 at 1:19 PMAre 上面:上边, 右面:右边 etc. really interchangable? They seem not the same to me. For example, if you were talking about a cat in relation to a tree and said it was 右边, I would think the cat was on the ground to the right of the tree. If you said it was 右面, I would think the cat had climbed up the right side of the tree and was clinging to the right surface. I suppose either way I would look to the right of the tree (or, rather I would look to the left because I get right and left mixed up anyway) and quickly locate the cat. So functionally they may be similar.

November 26, 2009 at 10:00 AMjimijames, would it imrove your view of the couple to know they were looking for a restaurant 饭店 rather than a hotel 饭店? Based soley on the fact that he had the address written down, I decided they were meeting friends. And he may not have been impressive but in my opinion she was very 娘娘腔的 and a good reminder of how never to be. But as I anticipate spending much time in China lost, they were excellent teachers!
