December 19, 2007 at 2:20 PMI will now synthesize Chittywangbang's comment about "hooters" with conversations about cat-headed hawks (aka Owls). To start, I'll say that 猫头鹰 was actually already in my pitiful-but-delightfully-eclectic vocabulary before this lesson. This is because the American chain restaurant Hooters is translated into Chinese as 美国猫头鹰餐厅 （měiguó māotóuyīng cāntīng, or American Owl Restaurant), as those of you who live in certain areas of Shanghai and Hangzhou (and maybe Beijing???) may know. The Chinese definitely doesn't carry the same innuendo as the English name, does it? (If anybody isn't familiar with the delightfully-lowbrow piece of Americana that is Hooters restaurant, and wants me to explain why the English name carries innuendo that the Chinese name does not, post a message and I will oblige.)

December 18, 2007 at 4:16 PMThe sign for "interstate 4" shows definite signs of being doctored: there is no silver-colored bolt on the bottom tip of the sign like there is on the interstate 10 sign. In my view, that still leaves a plethora of possibilities. Would you say I have a plethora of possibilities, Clay?

December 17, 2007 at 4:49 AMNOOO, Please don't add English to the dialogues!! fact, I think it would be better if the translation could be taken away, or at least hidden from the expansion page. Reading is a natural reflex, so people will, even unintentionally, be drawn down to read the English and that's not why we're all here!!!

A week from now I'm going from Shanghai to Kunming to visit a family I know there: mother, father, and two daughters aged early and late twenties. Are there any sort of local Shanghai things that I can bring as gifts? Obviously, I'm speaking of things that may not be available in stores in Kunming. I was thinking along the lines of snack foods and booze, but all suggestions are welcome. Thanks! -Dan
