May 24, 2007 at 2:38 AMA great mnemonic, too: yao1yao1si4 is both the tone number, and the phone number! (too bad it's not true of all numbers...)

May 17, 2007 at 3:06 AMI don't know about Wade-Giles being any easier than pinyin - they both cause their particular problems to the uninitiated. Like the x & q pronunciations for pinyin, it's counter-intuitive to think of d as being spelled "t", and t' as representing the sound "d" in WG... No matter which romanization system you choose, no 26 letter system for transcribing Chinese sounds will come naturally to someone without a modicum of training. Personally, I much prefer pinyin over WG. And I very much prefer my 啤酒 to be 冰的!

May 16, 2007 at 5:06 AMGood job, Cpod!! Love the graphic, love the little checkmarks that tell me what I got right in the exercise section! Very good topic! The first phrase I taught my husband when he visited me in China: Wo3 yao4 bing1de pi2jiu3. Thanks! ~Gi.

June 21, 2007 at 1:48 AMNot only is this a pretty good story, but it's also a pretty cool bar across the street from the Worker's Stadium in Beijing. Question about your expansion example 你挡了我的路了。(You blocked my way.) - could you explain to me why there are 2 了 in the sentence? I don't understand the grammar usage here. Thanks! ~Gi.
