as far as I know, the poem should not be demoralizing - it's hard to find it back in the wild just like not many people quote the whole "Faust II" all the time.
But yeah, I also have the problem that I grasp the wrong homophones when I listen to chinese. This can be cause for trouble or jokes - depending on the mood of the interlocutor.
