By all means its useful, and the Cantonese speakers in Shenzhen will appreciate you using it.
It may be straddled between Hong Kong and Guangzhou, but Shenzhen is a new city, filled with immigrants from all over China.
Its actually pretty multi-cultural. But overwhelmingly it is Mandarin speaking.
Guangzhou, on the other hand, defaults to Cantonese. But that is gradually changing.
