October 10, 2007 at 10:17 PM在課裡頭,殘酷和嚴酷被老師門提到又說清了. 殘酷 - 那樣做太殘酷了. It is ruthless to do that. 嚴酷 - 嚴酷的事實教育了我. Harsh reality taught me. Sentences are from PlecoDict.

October 9, 2007 at 10:44 PMIn some cases it's not, but in other cases it can be considered tough love, not telling them they are fat, but helping them know that it's time to get healthy.

October 8, 2007 at 5:26 AM嚴酷 was mentioned in the dialogue and the banter. The banter discussion differentiated 嚴酷 from ㄘㄢ(2) can(2) 酷. What is the character for can(2) 酷? Would anyone want to give us an example sentence for each of these terms to give a visual distinction? At the very end of the podcast, two examples were given for chessy, 肉麻 (sry for my guess for rou4 ma2 above) and the second example was....? Thank you Jenny for the clear explanation of the differences in uses for 關鍵和重點.

October 6, 2007 at 2:11 AMWesterners learning pinyin is fine. Yet, it seems that there is a good amount of interference between reading and sounding out ones native tough to reading and sounding out Mandarin pinyin. This does contribute to ones accent. There are other threads here that go into this topic throughly. The is another system out there that, IMO, can help most any Western, and maybe many Eastern learners of Mandarin, even from newbie to advanced learners.
