[QUOTE] Chinese is a tonal language. Ken, as a teacher and host, is purporting to TEACH the language. [QUOTE] Auntie are you purporting to TEACH Chinese by using letters and numbers?

哼,我以為中文播客是要學習中文的地方. 一看到這麼多的英文字,好像我剛上EnglishOnDemand.com.

Is it respectful to criticize, or gently remind, or softly point out to a person about their tones when they live in China, make a living learning the language, and has already shown the humility to recognize flaws, and has shown the determination to make corrections. A person in a situation like this, hourly is under the pressure of communication, and the importance of getting communication correct. Enduring hourly corrections from the environment. So is well intended constructive criticism from learners around the world really constructive? Well Auntie, hard to respond now, I am in between a hard and a hard space. My intent was to soften some criticism that really has little to no base to having been said. That said criticism was of John's change of infection between his English and Mandarin. As for my support of Ken, that was my intention, supporting him. He knows his tones can be off, he has said so numerous times and has even changed his involvement with lesson teaching because of it. Yet, here again, he has to endure more criticism of his language learning. Of course we can point out issues that we have with the service. I like you it seems, have had a less than positive experience with the change over from v2 to v3, and seemingly like yourself, have also felt chided for bring up my complaints and not just blindly praising Cpod. Furthermore, I am of the opinion in Ken's case, that his drive, stick-to-itiveness(sry for my lack of knowledge in spelling this word,if it even a word), and his willingness to put down his pride for the sake of learning. This, in my mind, out weighs the value of perfect tones. Cpod supplies numerous proper examples of the language, and in Ken's case, he also supplies a valuable asset to what it takes for all to learn language. So, if this still is not satisfactory explanation of my above efforts, then yes, it is perfectionism to continue to harp on Ken's tones. As for the sandpaper comment, harsh. Yet, it does seem, from this chair at least, that there has been an unusual amount of tough posts lately. I repost John's comments as to how Cpod handles themselves and their responsibility to us. "Interesting comments about my voice here! It's something I hadn't really noticed. I had thought that I was low key in both English and Chinese, but could it be more pronounced in Chinese? I am honestly not sure about this... Maybe Jenny can give her opinion, since I talk to her a lot in both English and Chinese, on and off the show. As for quality, I agree with everything everyone said here. We must improve the consistency and the quality of all aspects of the service (not just the lessons). I have just returned from vacation, and I'll be working hard to do just that!" If in anyway I have offended, first, I apologize, second, let me know, I have thick skin on my face so I can handle the adjustment. Rock on learners of Chinese.

Well done. Good work Dave. The method of saying the English and giving the listener time to reproduce the Mandarin, without a doubt, will help enhance speaking ability. Excellent. Excellent. Excellent.

John, Your Chinese rocks. You are close, if not even over, one hundred lessons now. I have listened to most of them, each numerous times, and not once have I thought you lacked confidence in your Mandarin. However, repeatedly I have thought you've shown great poise and enviable modeling. Recently, on the new 請問 podcast, I discovered that there is another non-native speaker there at Cpod that also has impeccable Mandarin. This would be Amber. Frankly John, IMO, she has a prettier voice than yours. This is meant to be a compliment to you and her. We wouldn't what your voice to pretty now would we? I am shocked that any non-native Mandarin learner poddie would have the audacity to even come close to criticizing your Mandarin. IMO if any non-native Mandarin speaker has the courage to get in front of a mic and broadcast their voice, teaching to anyone in the world who wants to listen, they have earned the privilege to be encouraged and praised by their students (knowing that the teacher is in a quality organization-as Cpod is). I am sure that Jenny, Peggy, Aggie, Connie and.... are enough, healthy, constructive criticism for all there at Cpod. This goes for you too Ken. I tire of the perfectionism that is out there expecting all of your tones to be on target. It is you that is modeling to all of us learners out here, as to what is takes to learn. Despite harsh criticism, you stand in the face of it with strong confidence and continue to fight, teach, and produce a marvelous tool for all willing, disgruntled or otherwise, learners of Mandarin in the world. 加油中文播客! Furthermore, I will second the TALK FREELY post that Lantian posted somewhere here on Cpod. We are here to learn, work to be better, not be perfect. I write in characters in hope that someone with more knowledge will point out my mistakes, in turn TEACHING me. One of the most basic principles of being human is that we learn from mistakes. In one word, children. Man I am hot. I don't know if it's because I am all fired up over this discussion or if its... its... global warming? So much for the global warming discussion topic:(
