July 19, 2013 at 12:03 AMA few years ago we joined Physical in Xujiahui in Shanghai for the month we were there. It was clean, the people were terrific, both workers and customers. We haven't joined again because we don't stay in Xujiahui when we go to Shanghai. It had air conditioning, but the price for a month was about the same as in the US, about $50 per person. So maybe it was a very expensive 健身房。

July 7, 2013 at 12:53 AMI kind of liked tysond's grouping of a lot of Western beliefs that may have some truth in them, and some hogwash, but are often (annoyingly) presented as absolutes. For example, soy milk isn't bad for you, but it doesn't have the calcium that animal milk has. Some plastic bottles may disintegrate over time, but most plastic containers are just fine. etc. The only really bad one (IMHO) is the belief that immunizations are dangerous.
I think a lot of us, no matter what culture, have some strong beliefs about healthy behaviors that deserve to be questioned. A lot of them have a little bit of science and a little bit of superstition behind them.

And how widespread is the recognition of 脚踏车 or 单车？ In Beijing? Yunnan? Or should we stick to 自行车 to be understood everywhere?

June 11, 2013 at 1:14 AMWe too have been surprised by Chinese saying completely obvious things, often in the form of a question.
For a long while we thought there must be a message, probably sarcastic or somehow critical. "啊，你来了? Oh, you've come?"
"What, should I have come earlier? Does she not want me here? Why did she say that?" we think.
But we have been reassured that it is merely meant as a conversation filler, a kind of acknowledgement and an invitation to continue talking. So if the guy were Western he might have said, "right. It's really dirty." or some thing that maybe Chinese would find weird. I can imagine a Chinese thinking "why did he say that? That's what I already said. Did he doubt me? Is he being sarcastic?"
Ah, those small cultural differences that no one tells us about because they are so tiny, and they are the ones that drives us crazy.
P.S. We now say to our Chinese friends when we see them "啊，你来了?“ too.

And keep those computer terms coming. Much as I want to, I have trouble remembering upload, download, update, upgrade, etc. But I have no trouble learning phrases about dead pigs and love relations.

(Though we would 先看价格，然后看款式，才再看质量 。）
