December 20, 2010 at 8:54 AMI always intended to make a journey to Xitang but I was always too scared to try! :) Maybe I can try next year on my 3rd trip to China in May 2011. The instructions on how to get there seem simple compared to the problems I encountered on my way to and from Mogan Shan (north of Hangzhou).

December 20, 2010 at 2:14 AMI can't understand this level of lesson (yet!) but here's a place that I have heard a lot about, which is very close to Shanghai. It's called "Xitang" and if I remember correctly was a filming location of one of the Mission Impossible movies. From what I have read and heard from friends, it is a very typical river town though it's probably seen a lot of development over the years due to its increased popularity as a destination for Shanghai-based tourists and tourism:

December 16, 2010 at 5:23 AMIf I buy something in China.. I would say "wo Zhongguo maide .... " but you're saying that if I want to ask if I can buy something in China I say "zai Zhongguo keyi mai"..
Could I not also say "wo keyi Zhongguo maide hongganji ma?"

December 15, 2010 at 7:41 AMAlso the Pleco dictionary, at least the one I have for iPhone, allows me to search by radical. It makes it much easier than using a hard-copy book to look up radicals.. takes a lot of the guess work out of things because it gives you a list of the radicals in a scrollable list and you can build the character step-by-step and go back if you select the wrong one etc

December 15, 2010 at 4:35 AMAhh yes.. sorry.. I forgot I had later asked my guided teacher, Lily, about this and she let me know that this, while grammatically correct, sounded weird and wouldn't be used. :)
Thanks for replying, I should have removed my question.. but at least now others will benefit from my silly question :)

December 14, 2010 at 10:40 AMCan I say:
"悉尼里..." In the same way as "公园里...".. That is, "In Sydney...". For example, "今天天气悉尼里很热。"

December 20, 2010 at 10:05 PMThis is often why you will hear a native Chinese speaker refer to their male friend as "her" and their female friend as "him". It comes up more than you would think, especially when you are having a flowing conversation where there is not really time, nor the need, to pay attention to gender-specific words.. :) hehe
Oops.. mean that to be a reply to sarahplusone
