December 14, 2010 at 8:56 AMIs there a specific one for a group of dogs that is different? Like the English "pack" of dogs? You could say "there are 3 dogs over there" with 条 but what about "watch out for that pack of dogs"?

December 14, 2010 at 8:45 AM条 is the measure word for long, thin things, like rivers and roads.. and stuff like that.
只 is the measure word for birds and some other animals.. I would assume that this one is more correct and perhaps this lesson has a mistake?
I dunno.. just guessing..

December 12, 2010 at 9:51 PMOr any powered thing with wheels (not necessarily motorised).. hehe.. "Who's are those trains?" :) or "Who's are those windmills?" would even be possible.. haha.. :) As always, context is king :)

December 12, 2010 at 1:04 PMHehe.. what's worse is that I was in the front seat, so I could see it all happening.. the cars coming past beeping their horns at us etc etc.. :) I knew deep down that this was all fine and ok.. after seeing many such crazy driving examples in Shanghai and witnessing zero accidents.. I just let it slide off me.. :)

December 12, 2010 at 11:17 AMSo while we are on the subject.. what would be the most common use word for "genocide"? I come up with a few different responses in my dictionary:
灭种 [滅種] miè zhǒng /to commit genocide/to become extinct/extinction of a race/
The first one makes sense to me, "exterminate" + "gene".. but I am more curious about why the other ones are there and what reason there is for having those other ones etc
