June 19, 2007 at 5:17 AMThe musical intro's with traditional Chinese instruments are excellent and a great improvement over the original jingo, which I remember hearing a few months ago, when my cirlce of friends and I just started with ChinesePod. The original jingo was obviously a chop suey jingo, and from the angle of an American. That jingo doesn't reflect anything to do with China, or the learning of Chinese. Not only that one of the songs in the jingo was used, [but not included into jingo] has a line that is very offessive to Chinese people, "...funky Chinaman from funky Chinatown..." Surely, an insensitive reference. My Dad told me that many radio stations banned that song some 30 years ago. So, it's inclusion was really insensitive. I'm sure Jenny wouldn't know the problems that that song created when it came out. So, whomever created that jingo and had it included, was surely somewhat immature and inappropriate. [nuff said] Obviously there was a problem with the original jingo, which is why it was removed and trashed. Thank the founders realized that and made the appropriate change. So, please do not use that original jingo again.

June 16, 2007 at 3:03 PMWade-Giles is so not cool, so not wired. Thank goodness, it's gone. Pinyin is way cool and wired! People from China do not use Wade-Giles to romanize their names. When Chinese people come west, they have Pinyin romanized names. It's about time, that Chinese people have standardized spelling for their names, using Pinyin. For instance, in the old days, when Chinese came West, they may have surnames of 周 - Zhōu] spelled in English as Chao, Chew, Chui Chow, Chou, Joe, Jew, depending about how they pronounced their name to the Immigration Officer, or how their name was romanized in Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Singapore, etc. But now, since China has unfied Pinyin, family surnames are now standardized, thank Goodness.

Most of my downloads have Chinese on them. 中级 中高级 高级, and then all of a sudden, the Chinese was eliminated, and English, Intermediate, Intermedate Upper, and Advance repaced the Chinese characters, but I would rather have 中级 中高级 高级 on my iTunes, so I superimpose 中级 中高级 高级 back on the lessons. Perhaps, some people complainted that they couldn't see 中级 中高级 高级 on their iTunes because they don't have their Apples or PC's adopted with Chinese Language instructions. But, nevertheless, I agree with you, that they shouldn't have "changed horses in the middle of the stream." There's nothing wrong with being freewheeling, it adds to the spice of life.

In this lesson, the writers are saying that all mixed blood children are smart and good looking. This is not true and a falsehood. I have friends that are mixed blood, and not all them are good looking, handsome, nor smart. They are just average people, just like everyone else. Not all people are smart, or good looking either. So, who are the writers of this lesson playing up too? I would imagine in China, mixed blood children of foreigners and their Chinese spouse still get stared at. 杂种 / 混血中西小孩， 不一定 是 太可爱的！ 不一定 是长得帅! 不一定不是很漂亮的! 不一定很聪明的! 您们拍老板的馬屁! June 14, 2007 at 8:17 AMMikeyinLondon, Don't buy it at the airport, you'll get ripped off. You can buy it at any small store, magazine stand, or China Mobile store, which are all over town. If your number has an '8' in it, it will cost more. If it has "4', then it will be cheaper. If you are going to travel all over China, be sure the Sim card you get in Shanghai can be recharged/renewed. There is a special card that is only good in Shanghai and can't be renewed elsewhere. You have to ask. If you can't speak Chinese, you might be in trouble. Not everyone can speak English at these stores, or stands. Good Luck.

In Vancouver, there are two Starbucks 'kitty' corner from each other on Georgia Street. Both places, you can sit and people watch at the tourists that walk by. But, then, if you're not from Vancouver, you wouldn't know about that.

June 23, 2007 at 12:23 AMJohn, I've noticed you and Jenny have really good chemistry together. It shows in the lessons, where you make a comment, and you crack her up. Surely, a sign that Jenny appreciates your personality. I think Jenny has a nice laugh. But didn't you say that you didn't like what a wuss Zhang Liang is? So, why not give him some balls? Or is this a reflection of Shanghaiese Men? No backbone? (smile)
