January 26, 2015, 07:49 PMnewtonvsleibnitz, I was just responding to mbettinson who referred to them as mass nouns. As you point out, mass nouns have nothing to do with this conversation, really. For the record, however, in English, mass nouns can't be pluralized - that's a diagnostic for them. Many mass nouns *can* be forced into being count nouns, often with an interpretation referring to different kinds, as in "Evian and Perrier are my two favorite waters," where "water" appears exceptionally as a count noun.
Referring to your more recent post, I think some Chinese measure words can be modified, as in 一大笔钱 or 两小瓶水。(I think these are both grammatical, but I encourage native speakers to correct me if I'm wrong!) Of course you can't do this with pure classifiers like 个，条，本，etc.

Hm, neither "flock" (which can be pluralized: three flocks of sheep) nor "sheep" (which is in fact plural in this context) are mass nouns.
I think words like "flock" and "herd" really are similar in function to Chinese classifiers (also see "head of cattle"), though syntactically they are just nouns that take a PP complement indicating the thing to be quantified.

March 12, 2014, 01:34 PM其实美国人觉得这种系统帮助爸爸妈妈照顾自己。如果老人有财务问题，没有健康问题的话，反向抵押有可能解决这个问题，爸爸妈妈能享受晚年。反正，那样是反向抵押系统的理想目的。
