April 8, 2011 at 8:10 AM旧 means old in th sense of being worn out, eg. an old pair of jeans, an old computer. 老 refers to old in the sense of having a long history, e.g. Beijing is an old city; This is the old Hilton.

There is another famous story "夸父追日" about a man named Kuafu who committed his entire life to chasing after the sun which eventually killed him. I always cried when I listened to the story as a kid.

People seem to take more liberty with commas and periods instead of observing the most accurate rules as long as they've got the meaning across.
