September 3, 2011 at 12:04 AM让 here functions in a similar way as 被 and it means an action was done to the subject, e.g. 钱被我花光了 is the same as 钱让我花光了。In the semple sentence, we usually put the cause first followed by the consequence. So "he said dirty words and was beaten for that".
