But now, it refers to the burgening middle class and a refined lifestye. However, it carries a tinge of condescension since it refers to the lower rank of middle class. 牛 is a Beijing slang meaning excellent or 厉害。The national adoption of the word is a rather new phenomenon.

May 15, 2008 at 2:25 AMYears ago in Singapore, I saw vendors attach a plastic doll to the pump which makes the tea bubbly. The doll would bounce up and down frantically. Quite quirky.
