June 27, 2008 at 6:15 PM大家以前普遍把用过的塑料袋作垃圾袋用。但是现在塑料袋要收费，所以报纸上说有人开始“裸丢”垃圾。就是什么也不包，直接丢在垃圾桶里，弄得非常脏。新政策总要慢慢总结、适应。

There is no clear logic behind why we shorten 三十 into 三 other than a matter of speech habit. In the context of describing approaching an age threshold, this is quite common. Eventhough you only hear single digit, it actually refers to 10's.

You can say '我和老板有类似的感觉/wo3 he2 lao3 ban3 you3 lei4 si4 de gan3 jue2.' 类似 means 'similar'.

June 24, 2008 at 5:46 PMI also like this new series because it combines practical office language and the subtleties of social interactions. The attitude of the middle aged boss is very typical in China. Perhaps even quite universal.
Regarding the use of English, we consciously want to limit it as the level goes up. But in some cases, I choose English in order to get the meaning across more efficiently. This is mostly for words which are appropriate for the level, but their explanation in Chinese is too challenging. I'll keep paying attention to the issue.

June 19, 2008 at 4:53 AMI remember going to work with my mom during school vacation, because there was no day care facility or baby sitters. Her 单位/ dan1 wei4/ 'work unit' had huge meetings where the entire workforce attended. But no one was really listening. There were people reading, eating melon seeds and even knitting. And of course, my mom brought me along as if it were a day care center.
