February 7, 2009 at 3:27 PMThe only time I've ever rode a 黑车 was ironically on Huaihai Rd, Shanghai's busiest shopping street. It was rush hour and a car stopped in front of me almost like a scene from a spy movie.
P.S. Pete's list reminds me that 黑/hei1/black makes a colourful list of words.

Lili told me that every time she rides a taxi, upon knowing she is from Mexico, the middle aged driver always compliments Mexico's great TV and movies shown here back in the days.

I think 墨琳/mo4 lin2 would also make a good name. 墨 means Chinese ink, the dark block used in calligraphy. I had a classmate whose name was 朱墨. God I wished I had her name!

We translate tortilla into 玉米饼/yu4 mi3 bing3, meaning flat corn bread. An exact description of what it is. Salsa is transliterated as 莎莎酱/sha1 sha1 jiang4.

滑稽 is a good word too. It's slightly more formal and dated than say 搞笑 is. In Shanghai, we have our version of cross talk done in the dialect and known as 滑稽戏/hua2 ji xi4.
