June 19, 2009 at 2:30 AMI love today's lesson. Chinese names are an absolutely fascinating topic. There are thousands of characters and tens of thousands of combinations one can come up with. Mathmaticians will love it!

What's funny about Dongbei accent? I am afraid this can't be explained clearly. It only comes with a deep sense of the Chinese language 语感/yu3 gan3. What does make certain accents more amusing than others? A fascinating topic indeed.

June 18, 2009 at 5:12 AMWhen used properly, Baijiu can add a very special dimension to food. In Shanghai, there is a green veggie dish 清炒豆苗/qing1 chao3 dou4 miao2/stir fried doumiao. Locals add a tinge of Baijiu and a dash of sugar before plating. It‘s got to be the best veggie dish on earth.

Shenyajing is the voice of the waiteress. Although no native of Dongbei, she did a great job!

Thank you for the list! Frequency is indeed at the top of the list when creating content for each level. In newbie and ele, we cover the most high frequency vocab and survival phrases. With no disrespect at all, I have to say these words aren't really high frequency for newbie and ele learners.

不要小看乌龟。它们虽然行动慢,但是可以活100多岁。所以在一些东方国家,乌龟代表长寿,是吉祥的象征。

Very glad that you picked the ringtone up. This song is the default ringtone that literally every delivery man in China uses.

June 16, 2009 at 1:25 AMDespite the theme of today's lesson, I have to say courier service in China is quite phenomenal. It costs 5 kuai in the same city, and as little as 10 kuai to deliver a light package from Beijing to Shanghai in 2-3 days. But there are no Lance Armstrong look alike delivery men here.

June 19, 2009 at 2:31 AMBTW, the point of tacky names that John and I made at the end of the podcast. Has anyone developed a sense to discern Chinese names?
