You are correct, the pronunciation for 二百五 is er4 bai3 wu3. Do you mean Skritter says 二 is second tone? Then there must be a mistake.

This past summer, many passengers complained about the stuffy carriage. So the management of the Shanghai subway put ice in some carriages to keep temperature low. It turns out that the trains were made in Germany, thus had air conditioning system made for German summer not Shanghai's.

There was a big jewish presence in Shanghai during the late 30's to the mid 40's. Shanghai’s open-port allowed over 20,000 European Jews seeking refuge from Nazi Germany. It is said that during this period, more Jews found sanctuary in China than in any other country in the world.

I did this series because I want to tell authentic and personal stories of expats in China to a wide audience on ChinesePod. And doing it in English would achieve the purpose better. However,if the guest is more comfortable with Chinese (as I do plan to feature Chinese guests too), the interview will of course be in Chinese.

You are correct. Some of the annotations are indeed incorrect. We will fix them ASAP. "To scheme" is 策划阴谋/ce4 hua4 yin1 mou2.  策划 means to plan, 阴谋 is a conspiracy.

I echo your thoughts. The culture and lifestyle in Shanghai is quite materialistic and blase, so it's great to hear about the work that members of Bean (and other organizations) are doing. The fact is many many people even Chinese don't connect with the community outside their own circle. So caring and actually doing something for others is indeed respectible.

Feedback is always welcome. For me, the interviewees in this series all have one quality in common: making it happen in China. In the case of Amy and Bean, she didn't know what rules and regulations she'd be facing in setting up and running a volunteering organization in China. She just went ahead and did it. Maybe that's a blessing because now we have an organization in Shanghai which does great things for the community and helps its members to connect. But I certainly could have asked better questions to focus more on that.
