November 12, 2007 at 4:51 PMIt's interesting that 宣传 can also be translated as propaganda. I spoke to a colleague last week who was rather puzzled in talking to a Chinese translator who kept talking about 'propaganda' instead of publicity.

October 24, 2007 at 4:36 PMSeem to remember the Chimay in The Tree was fairly reasonable. 40 kuai or so, which isn't bad by international standards. They did have more pricey ones on the 酒单 but I don't think I was ever drunk enough ;-) I'll note down Beer Mania for my next trip gardka. In the mean time, it's been nice to having a virtual trip back to my old haunts.

October 23, 2007 at 1:05 PMgardka, is Beer Mania a new one? Certainly didn't know about it when I was in Beijing. The Tree just off Sanlitun had a good range of Belgian beers though which were cheaper than you'd get in a bar in the UK.

October 16, 2007 at 12:43 PMI think the story lessons really work, and the characterisations are really good. But is it just me that thinks that Ken is getting a little too obsessed with Yang Jie? All this stuff about her being superficial etc. It sounds like something out of Wang Wei's diary! Jenny practically had to drag him away from the subject to get to the lesson ;-)

September 6, 2007 at 12:36 PMBazza what's Hanzibar? I'm always asking my Chinese friends for help with which modal particle to use when but I always get pretty vague answers.

September 6, 2007 at 12:30 PMWhen I lived in Beijing I got typically Chinese mixed messages on 小姐。My Chinese teacher told me to avoid it at all costs, but one of my Chinese friends used it and when I commented told me that it's all a matter of context. Come to think of it, the scenario of this dialogue was pretty much the context in which she said it was liable to be misinterpreted!

July 23, 2007 at 4:24 PMHaven't been able to listen to it, I'm trotting home with it clutched in my hot little hand on a memory stick. But disappointed to hear it's actually an alternative ending. I was hoping for something along the lines of Marlon Brando's quote from 'Last Tango in Paris'. 'When something is over it begins again'. Couldn't we have 'Actually maybe it wasn't over after all?' With all due respect to our earnest Canadian businessman, he isn't quite the same draw as a regular character.

November 15, 2007 at 1:40 PMThis story is a really good bridge between Lower and Upper Intermediate. The knowledge of the context that you bring with you from previous episodes really seems to help. No doubt that's why you've introduced the stories across all the levels. Fiendishly clever.
