June 24, 2009 at 8:24 PMI thought that if you used 把 then the verb had to have a complement e.g. 请把你的作业防在桌子上 。 Lao Wang's pal says '我才把机会给你'. Is there some exception going on, or am I just wrong?
Incidentally just to invert the Chinese Pod gender sterotyping for once could we have a teacher's pet/boss/gangster who's male? :-))

I think I was thrown by the fact that it takes two sentences to express this in English - the idea that it's better to be prepared, and that if something comes up 'we' will be stronger. I was looking for something that completed the first idea before introducing the second.
I'm often amazed at just how many ideas can be contained within a Chinese sentence.
Thanks again, and thanks for the suggestion for future questions. I often feel that questions can get lost when there are multiple threads set running by a lesson.

June 11, 2009 at 7:54 PMI' probably getting to this lesson too late to hope for a response to this, but here goes anyway. Doesn't this phrase: '提前预防比倒是侯‘ seem incomplete? I feel like it ought to be '比倒是侯 (什么，比如说‘好’）。Is it a set phrase, or am I just missing something?

I'm sure your friend is right that in some office cultures in China the dialogue would not be realistic. China's a huge country and even within a single city more and less formal atmospheres coexist, just as they do in many cities.
One thing I have noticed is that there are certain Chinese people who speak with great authority on behalf of the whole nation in terms of stating what is and is not Chinese, which is perhaps not the wisest in an ever more diverse, and rapidly changing, culture.

May 6, 2009 at 9:35 PMYou put it so much clearer than I did ljouneau, thanks. You're exactly right. I think I've grasped the when now too. But I am still puzzled about the where and I've also never really got the sort of clarity that Chinesepod could bring to the question.
What we need is the same treatment that the double 了 got in an excellent Qing Wen on the subject.

May 5, 2009 at 9:05 PMI still get confused about the difference between 'accomplished fact' 了，which I understand is sentence了, and 'completed action' 了, which I thought was verb 了.
Also if 'completed action' is indeed sentence 了，why is it 起晚了 and not 起了晚

I was just wondering about the use of 的 in this sentence 这回我买的是七彩乐. Is this part of the 是... 的 pattern? More than one Chinese person has told me that 的 can be used to indicate past tense sometimes in preference to 了。The examples I was given are 我是在北京买的 and 去年十月我到伦敦回来的。 Were they just misinterpreting the 是... 的 pattern? In other words if I use those sentences am I in fact stressing that I bought the think in Beijing and that it was last October that I got back?

March 15, 2009 at 12:32 PMI'm a big fan of Qing Wen, but I wondered if I could 麻烦你们 to make good your promise to build up a comprehensive guide to that slippery fish 了。You did a couple of lessons on it a while back and there were promises of more. I'm sure with your help I could finally crack it.
