January 7, 2008 at 3:33 PMin a population of only 4.5 million (of which under 3.5 million are "ethnic Chinese"), the idea of a "local dialect" sounds simply... daft.The population of Switzerland is hardly any larger, yet every village of the German-speaking part seems to be speaking a slightly different dialect!

January 7, 2008 at 10:53 AMit's funny how Singapore cleanliness always comes up, a bit too clean maybe unless you live there (which I did for a year way back... wasn't smart enough to learn Chinese back then). another important thing that wasn't mentionned is the climate. Singapore is pretty much on the equator so there's no season, it's the same 6am-6pm pattern every single day, with heavy rain alternating with hot and humid weather. One of my colleagues told me he had experienced seasons for the first time when studying in Japan. This is odd considering how important seasons are in Chinese culture, TCM and food.
