March 13, 2010 at 10:35 AMA tip: you can't use 和 in this way. 和 is used only to link two nouns, not to separate 2 clauses.
So you can use 和 in the sense of "tea and coffee", but not "I did this and then did this".
Other than that, your sentence looks too "English", but I don't have the ability to suggest refinements.

March 13, 2010 at 8:04 AMIn the Expansion Sentence:
衣服烤干了吗?(Yīfu kăo gān le ma?) Are the clothes dry yet?
Does 烤干 imply a particular method of drying? Could this sentence be used some time after:
1. Putting your clothes in the clothes dryer;
2. Leaving them out in the sun;
3. Tossing them in the corner of your room;
4. Coming out of a pool, after diving in with your clothes on (and leaving your clothes on afterwards).
Are there other words which mean 'to dry'? (note: the verb 'to dry' can be taken in 2 ways - to cause to dry - or to dry of its own accord. I'm looking for how to say either.)

March 13, 2010 at 6:09 AMExpansion Sentence:
今天就说到这儿吧。(Jīntiān jiù shuō dào zhèr ba.) Today, let's stop [a class or meeting] here.
I just can't see how you get that meaning from this sentence. Help please.

March 13, 2010 at 6:04 AMWho are you talking to mate? Do you really think this guy is still around 4 years after making this comment?

March 13, 2010 at 3:50 AM"哥们儿 is colloquial Chinese for dude."
Another one is 大哥. Perhaps its not "dude", but "buddy", "mate".

March 13, 2010 at 12:49 AMI guess thats what I thought middle school would be. I am pretty sure we don't use that term in NSW though. So, are you saying there are special schools which just cater for those years? It seems odd to create yet another period in a kids life requiring adjustment and upheaval.
Anyway, could someone confirm that that is what is meant by middle school in China.

March 13, 2010 at 12:42 AMYou don't see the value of reinforcement? I would be interested in an Evolution lesson too. But I doubt I will ever discuss that topic in Chinese. Let's stick to the language we are likely to use in our lifetime at the Intermediate level, and save the stuff most people will never use for the higher levels. And I have no problems with topics being continually revisited with a slight change in focus. How many of us can actually use the language we've learned after just one lesson on a topic?

March 12, 2010 at 11:32 PMIn one of the expansion sentences, 中学 (zhōngxué) is defined (quite literally) as 'middle school'. What exactly is middle school? We don't use that term in Australia?

March 12, 2010 at 12:11 PMThanks for that - I might pick up on the sentiment of people's comments more quickly in the future. I think I'll stick to English however.

March 13, 2010 at 11:44 AMNothing wrong with experimenting - you are braver than I am in that respect - I dread making mistakes.
My name will change, one way or the other, after Monday night's game.
