Try right clicking the picture.  On the drop-down menu choose: Format Picture, tab ‘Layout', wrapping style ‘Square', Horizontal alignment ‘Other'.

Many thanks for trying to help me. I just caught your original reply, so I listened to the 请问 on the是...的 pattern; it's for time, place, person.
There's probably a simple reason for that 的. At least it's got me revising stuff I'd forgotten. (and I certainly made a bad mistake in my question - you cannot mix 得 and 地.)

A really useful lesson.
I'm wondering about the 的 in录得挺顺利的. At first I thought it was a typo for 地, but 顺利 is already an adverb. So what purpose does it serve?

The font is embedded in the pdf file.  Your Adobe Reader cannot extract the font.  My office PC has Reader 7.0 and has the same problem, but my own machine runs Reader 8.x and works OK.
Upgrading your version of Adobe Reader should do the trick.

People were wondering why the 口 in 骨 is at times on the left and at others on the right. It depends on which fonts are installed.

For 骨 it's neither here nor there, but the two versions of 直 look like two different characters.

The Pablo icon should be in the systray on the taskbar, bottom right. You click on it to turn popups off and on. As my PC is an antique, I just use pablopopup.exe; the rest won't work. Google looked good, but overloaded the system. It needs a modern computer. The interface is in Chinese. The widget for Dict.cn on Opera (my default browser) is the poorest. You have to highlight each character. You can also run DimSum through your browser. Macbook, what's that?

Thank you for your input on 把.

If a comment is one long screed of hanzi, just ignore it. I do. Treat a short simple sentence as a chance to practice. There are so many tools that give you the pinyin and the meaning of the characters when you mouse over them: Pablopopup for Explorer and Word, Perakun for Firefox, Dict.cn for Opera, Google. It's a way of learning words in context that works for me.

Many thanks for the explanation. So I should have left off the 一个 before the 苹果 or been specific and also completed the action. That's the safest course for an Ellie like me and I'll stick to it.

But pituitaryadenoma wrote that 我把一个苹果放在桌子上 is OK and changye gave an example of reduplication: 你把那个房间收拾收拾.

So could the wicked queen say to Snow White, "你把这个苹果试试。"?

from changye's contribution to your post, I can see now that 我把一个苹果吃 is wrong. But I still can't understand why it's wrong. We definitely need a QW about 把.

I feel that 把 acts like the verb ‘to do'. 他把一个苹果吃 - he does an apple eat. This construction is sometimes used in German: Er tut einen Opel fahren; he does an Opel drive; 他把一辆欧宝开(车?). For the past tense, obviously it is the verb that gets modified. I did an egg eat: 我把一个鸡蛋吃 过, 了 or 过了。What is the correct grammar here, because I'm totally lost on past tenses? A Qing Wen on simple past tenses is definitely at the top of my wish list.
