June 11, 2011 at 7:27 AMI ran into a 50 year old woman who was chain somking cigs, but told me she didn't eat bbq because she read that BBQ gives you cancer. I laughed and pointed at her cigarettes and said "what about those?" Her reply was something along the lines of "Oh these, these are healthy for you. It keeps the smog out"

June 11, 2011 at 7:23 AMIt's really a cultural thing, and a lot of the guys like it. It's something they bond over, and at work we would all go take smoke breaks together, talk about the cigs we liked, blow smoke rings, etc. I only met a few girls who would publically smoke though. When Chinese people would ask:
哦，你抽烟吗？老外不常抽，为什么你抽呢？
I would often reply:
空气这么脏，无所谓。
Which usually got a few laughs from smokers and non-smokers alike. Though in more developped cities it was more acceptable to not somke, though you can make up for it with drinking :P. I'd say you can not smoke, but if you're a male, you have no excuse not to drink.

June 11, 2011 at 9:02 AMYeah allergies is probably your best bet for an excuse :) Age is definitely a factor too! I did notice that as well. Over 40 did seem to slow down on the smoking, i remember one guy telling me he will only smoke 10 a day on doctor's orders. But my officer worker friends in Beijing were 2 packs a day I'd say.
Yeah I don't think anyone gets offended by it, it's like if two Mets fans meet each other in a bar, or you're waiting for a bus and you happen to have the same brand as the guy standing there. Great conversation starter I suppose :) I was pretty shocked to see Xiaophil's story about his friend getting beat up, but there are crazy people out there all over the world.
