I'm not very sure but I think that is a shortened form of shi4 shei2 song4 de5? (I.e. the shi...de pattern.) If that is correct, there is an explanation in this lesson, at time 7:16. And some more shi...de here.

I take a shot at this one. I think both 什么朋友？shen2me5 peng2you5 and 哪个朋友？ na3ge5 peng2you5 can be used here. 哪个 na3ge5 should mean "which one" (which one in a group of friends, for example which one of our common friend, w.w. of your friends, w.w. of all friends on the planet etc.) E.g. 哪个朋友？ na3ge5 peng2you5 Which friend? 高的那个 gao1 de5 na4ge5 The tall one.
什么 should mean "what" (what kind of friend, what sort of friend). So, in the dialogue, the jealous guy is at first not intrested in which friend has sent the gifts to his girlfriend but rather what sort of friend has sent the gift: male or female. 什么朋友，男的还是女的。What friend? Male or female?
Then, the guy also realizes it would be nice to know which friend has sent gifts to his girlfriend, so he says: 谁啊？ shei2 a Who?
This elementary lesson is useful. It deals with na4ge5 and na3ge5.
Let's leave it to our teachers to confirm wether this reasoning is right or wrong ^_^

I have the same experience as Calkins. It works "everywhere" (this includes cPod search box) but not in the cPod commet box.

John posted an interesting link on the blog. A lightweight pinyin input extension for firefox. It works on a number of sites but not on cPod it seems..? ><

February 11, 2009 at 1:27 PMI see, that's a good point. Typing pinyin right here would be nice. Up to now, If I needed to type a few words I'd just use numbers to indicate tone. When I type Several sentences or try to transcribe a lesson I use MDGB and copy/paste.
