October 21, 2008 at 2:11 AMThis lesson is good because it gives one vocabulary for developing and defending an argument. The back and forth is very well-conceived and the lesson taught me much about the relative strengths of the two search engines.

Posted on: Transliteration into Chinese and the Long Pinky Fingernail
September 28, 2008 at 11:04 PMTexans in the know call "W" "shrub." I've read in many sources that the long fingernail historically signified that one was not a manual laborer because such a long nail would get in the way of doing work with the hands.. In other words, the nail is a status symbol: it marked an intellectual vs. a manula worker. That's the analysis of Veblen and other sociologists.

September 25, 2008 at 4:37 PMReally good acting in this dialogue by both speakers. The man's role is especially challenging and his performance is priceless--the disbelief at the loss of his phone, the rising panic in his voice, the sense of being overwhelmed by the bureucracy, the dawning realization that both his money and info are gone. He gets a Pod-Oscar for this one! Will cpod disclose the name of the amazing performer?
Posted on: Buying on Taobao
September 23, 2008 at 3:19 PMOoooh, I loved this lesson. One of my favorite so far because of all the ethics-related vocabulary (trust; trustworthy; cheat, safe, guarantees, etc.). Also liked it because I buy stuff on ebay--I don't really care if someone has worn a skirt suit once or twice. After all, some "new" clothes are tried on 7 or 8 times in the store before they are sold! In America, a lot of well-made, high end clothing is sold on ebay by socialites ("social x-rays" as Tom Wolfe termed them) who wear a dress or jacket once and then ask someone to sell it for them because they wouldn't be caught dead wearing the same thing twice. I've read that starlets have friends and family search ebay for good deals on clothes.

September 15, 2008 at 2:09 AMAs for a jingle--how about a few bars of Shanghai jazz? I'm a techno-inept so I'm not going to produce a jingle myself but I think something with a Shanghai flavor would be nice. Any takers out there?

September 15, 2008 at 2:08 AMI think they said "tu of the week." Tu is someone who is not very sophisticated, sort of a rural dork?? But maybe I misunderstood!
