May 31, 2012 at 2:53 AMI've just been looking again through the different books in the Comprehensive Chinese series on Amazon and I'm just wondering which one I would get.
On Amazon part of the description says "The third level teaching materials attempt the gradual transition from spoken lauguage to written language", which book would this be referring to? An intermediate book or lower? Have you been through the "Comprehensive Chinese: Intermediate Chinese I (When in China)" book?

May 31, 2012 at 2:40 AMYeah I guess maybe I should try to push it a bit more than wait for it naturally, sometimes it's hard to know which one is better. I don't want to be an exceptional writer, I just want to be able to write a bit so when it comes to reading and translating I'll be more comfortable.
Oh so you haven't studied in China before? Are scholarships readily available to study in China for you guys or are they quite scarce?

May 28, 2012 at 10:33 PMThanks for your detailed explanation, I am very jealous that you guys have such a good Chinese department, hopefully I can get what I need out of a Chinese university one day. Seeing as I'm not quite up to Advanced level, I think I might wait a bit before buying one of those books. Recently I have had to do some translation for one of my papers but I find that they always come out in more of an oral style, I guess the skill will come naturally eventually.
