看完两三个视频以后，我就又回去练弹弓的地方尝试了
看完两三个视频以后，我就回练弹弓的地方再次尝试
Can someone tell me what's going on here?

November 6, 2012 at 2:33 AMSo are you saying that "but it was the opposite" doesn't sound right to you? The reason for it being translated like that is to help you think of it differently. John will do this sometimes in order to make it clear in your mind what the difference is, I assume he was doing that in this lesson. But a more natural translation for a lot of them would use "but rather" or "instead" I think.

November 5, 2012 at 3:04 AM我知道这两个句子的结构不一样，不过含义可能有点不一样吧？我不是说以为和反而是个固定搭配，而是说它们好像经常搭配在一起。以为和反而这两个词让我想到以为和原来这个句型，前面有个不准的想法，然后后面有个跟想的不同的结果。当然，以为和反而是强调这两个部分是相反的而不是不同。
顺路问一下，我造的句子都没错吧？

November 4, 2012 at 1:15 AMThat's so weird, I totally thought this was my question, turns out you guys read my mind. I actually had this problem like a few weeks back, the way I've kind of differentiated them in my mind is that I will add 不但不 in the first part of the sentence and if that doesn't work then it's not a 反而 sentence, and in this way I can think of "not only... but rather" as a way to get my mind around it until I master it. I'm going to try some sentences:
这个办法不但没有用，反而把问题弄得更糟糕了。
这个药不但没有效，反而有不少副作用。
他刚刚从中国回来，他的中文没有进步反而退步了。
大家都等待股票上升，股票不但没有上升反而下降了很多。
Just to make things more confusing, you can make this sentence into 反而 can't you?
我以为妈妈要批评我，相反，妈妈还表扬了我。
妈妈没批评我反而表扬了我
Some 相反 examples:
我和他的兴趣相反
我和他的个子相反
我以为大家都喜欢学英文，相反，大家都说讨厌。
Is it possible to assume that 以为 and 相反 can commonly be seen together?

October 13, 2012 at 10:59 AMThat's so weird, I think people like to claim there are big differences between them. My Chinese lecture told us to make sentences with 不过 and we made them as if we were using 但是 or 可是 but he said they were wrong. I think I need to start using 不过 more though, I guess I was kind of scared to haha.

November 12, 2012 at 6:56 AM不敢当！这个例子是我在一个博客里写下的，博客前面说“几天前”，所以时态已经明显了。但是有一个人看了我的博客说我应该把“看完两三个视频以后我就回练弹弓的地方又尝试了”改成“看完两三个视频以后，我就回练弹弓的地方再次尝试”。难道他修改的不对？另一个人修改的是上面第一个句子。
