(don't know how to say this in good Chinese..)

Hi Miantiao, 多谢! I always think the "le" particle is confusing (Usually I just go by intuition, but that's not always safe).

Isn't there (yet) another 给,which is more or less like

被 (passive), as in the sentence

(bing1 qi2 lin2 gei3 hai2zi chi1 diao4 le)

*(I don't know if there is supposed a "了" here or not, I think I'll never learn that, sigh...)

=The kids ate up all the ice cream!

Is this right?

Hey John, maybe the 卡 was one of those metro cards (so the girl could get back to the office without delay!). I heard that in China, people used metro cards to covertly hand over large sums of money, e.g. as bribes or even chun jie presents (?), not sure anymore. I don't know how much money one can 充 onto these cards, but it seems to be quite a lot.

Hi johnsyz,

I agree that traditionally, the man would be the breadwinner and the woman would stay at home, and this  pattern may have been the same for generations. BUT, the difference is that now, as opposed to 100 years ago, women have (near) equal opportunities, meaning they can get a good education and with that a basis for being financially independent, and that certainly has a great influence on the roles of men and women in society. It probably applies more to urban areas than rural ones. Social realities may also change faster than people's thinking, I guess that's natural.

What I find irritating about this is that their ambition is not "I want lots of money" but rather "I want a guy with lots of money". (it doesn't make these girls look very intelligent).

Hi benchannevy,

I understood Jenny's comment to be more or less

Actually, in Shanghai nowadays, the richest men (or persons) are not the Shanghainese but people from all parts of the country who come to Shanghai to live or to invest in (buy) houses.

Hi Bodawei,

Not sure where you heard 宫五, but if it was at the beginning, then it may have been the "wu" of episode 5, no? See the comment above by ashka824.

Whoa, 小顺子自从故事开头 —— 那时他还真是天真烂漫的小孩 —— 到目前为止,“发展”得非常厉害!I think I missed one or two of the lessons in between, but I remember the first one, when poor little 小顺子 was kidnapped on a rainy day!

(but correct me if I'm wrong; I mean the explanations that appear in the boxes when holding the cursor over a word), 比如:

一味 (in this sentence, this is a measure word, no?)

神医 (miracle doctor; was translated as "spirit")

本宫 (translated as "measure word for books" ?!)
