April 21, 2011, 10:23 PMI'm curious about the usage of 开 in 开发票 as demonstrated in the sentence:
一般来说，去税务局开发票要交的发票税由你来承担的话，房东都会同意的。
It is translated as "have them write a receipt" in the dialog. I would like to see some other exampels of 开 used in this way. For me, I would have no idea it means "have them write a" in this context.
I'm also interested in the use of 由 in the same sentence. It seems to be a passive marker, and 被 could have been used instead.

Yes, Chinese media coverage is scarce indeed. In fact, since the Libyan government overthrow there has been a concerted effort by the CCP to crack down on Chinese dissidents. Just today, Ai WeiWei (艾未未), a pretty famous artist in China who was commissioned to design the Bird's Nest Stadium for the 2008 Beijing Olympics is now being detained on charges of "economic fraud." We have seen the CCP go through these cycles of clamping down and then slowly releasing its grip, only to be prompted to clamp down again due to some perceived threat.

April 06, 2011, 01:06 AMI'm also interested in usage of the word "重新". Especially, how was it used in the last sentence with "就说" following it ("...或者是重新就说是改变他们的一些产品的设计的东西..."). Doesn't 就说 mean something like " just sayin' "?

April 06, 2011, 12:48 AMI'm curious about the grammar surrounding both 而言 (with regards to) and 来讲 (considering, as to). Do these two "words" fill the same grammatical slot? Are they interchangable?
In the third sentence, could " 第一个层次来讲" be interchanged with "第一个层次而言" and still sound just as natural?
How about the first sentence: could "那就本土化的问题而言" be changed to "那就本土化的问题来讲"?
By the way, 来讲 doesn't seem to be in the Chinesepod dictionary, as hovering either character only shows the definition for that character.

March 06, 2012, 01:11 AMAm I just crazy or does 除了 also have the opposite meaning, as in "except for". For example:
除了你大家都想去
I thought that translates as "except for you, everyone else wants to go". However this lesson would have me understand "besides you, everyone else wants to go as well". Some clarification please!
Also the third exercise under Dictation is off by one character. The speaker says "玩儿" while the expected sentence does not include the 儿.
