的士(di si) is the HongKong Cantonese word for "taxi", and it's a transliteration from English. Later on when taxis became common in mainland China, people used the 的 (dī) in the Hong Kong word for Taxi, and added the verb 打dǎ, so it became 打的(dǎdī).
My question now is, why add 打？I don't think we can add 打 to any other mode of transportation. I don't think we can say any of the following: 打火车， 打公车，打飞机， 打三轮车，打人力车.
So, why add a 打 for "打的“ ？

April 23, 2013 at 2:47 PMI'm confused about what you mean. I doubt the 打 in 打的 means "call" or "hail", and I doubt it comes from that idea. I'd rather we don't speculate about this, and see if there's anyone who really knows why this 打 is in 打的.
