This may seem churlish but you and at least RJ know how sensitive us Australians can be. Despite the best efforts of soccer impresarios, the average Australian still calls the round ball game soccer. I did not hear the term 'football' applied to soccer by anyone at all (apart from in English films) until say the last few years - and I still think that it is a bit of a marketing joke. But anyway, go the Socceroos. Wait - even the name of our national team is a give-away!

June 4, 2010 at 1:07 PMMy reference to 'county' buses is to those that run on the outskirts, maybe Shanghai doesn't have that terminology? Here they often have a C before the route number. My experience of county buses is slight but the ones I've been on here don't make any announcements. (Driver is too busy smoking, on the mobile phone ,taking sips of tea, talking to mates, etc.)

Thing is, phone isn't practical for conversing with a dozen or so mates simultaneously all round the world. Nor is email, too slow, clunky. Twitter adds a chunk of material to life's rich tapestry.

裳梨花 shang1li2hua1 (Shangli flower) [My dictionary has 裳 with no tone, and no meaning. I guess that it just goes with 梨 to give us the name of a flower. Contributions welcome.]

什锦米线 shíjǐnmǐxiàn (rice noodles, served cold)
The noodles are hiding under the colourful display. While this may look all style and little substance, it is a really tasty dish.

June 4, 2010 at 4:10 AMI have never heard a bus driver announce a bus stop - this must be a Shanghai special? I've been in lots of buses. Either there is an automated announcement or (on some county or inter-town buses) nothing - you have to ask. Where are we?
