I can't imagine that Rupert Murdoch is having a giggle in his newspapers about the word 'rooting' (not good for business) so I assume that you mean in a general way he has too much influence? But surely he is not influencing the language (in a bad way?) His mother, by the way, always comes over as such a nice old lady. I think she is generally much liked and admired in Australia. And no doubt she is proud of young Rupert.

滇菜

Dinner last night in Yunnan - 干焙洋芋丝 gānbèiyángyùsī (potato pancake); 素什锦 (芥蓝,蘑菇) sùshíjǐn jièlán,mógū (mixed vegetables; broccolini and mushroom); 孜然牛肉 zīránniúròu (cummin beef - really a 新疆自治区菜 dish from Xin Jiang Autonomous Region)

呵呵 - (that is my 15 year old's brain giggling - the real me is extremely serious). Zhenlijiang - of course I don't want you to be anyone but yourself. .... (but) it is hard to 'be yourself' if the Americans are allowed to colonise the language. As an aside - how do you express 'barracking' in Japanese? Do you transliterate roo - ting? In China we could say 如听 rútīng ??

But as I say, the Brits, Aussies and Kiwis like a good laugh, and this word 'rooting' does it for us. ;-)

韩国比希腊2010/06/12

China has gone World Cup mad - last night it seems everyone was watching 韩国比希腊(S.Korea v Greece). China has more than 400 million televisions (as many as the US, Japan, India and Russia combined) but people watched in public places, like in the West when TV was first introduced. Here about 40 people are standing on the footpath watching the TV set up outside a supermarket. 韩国赢了希腊比赛 (S.Korea won.)

The Americans in this thread who are 'rooting' for one team or another (even themselves!) should be aware that this sounds pretty funny to other English speakers.  Thanks for the entertainment.  :)

[PS. 'Rooting' is one American word that I can never get over - it is my 15 year old's brain.]

Your 'when did you stop beating your wife'-type question is unlikely to be appreciated by anyone here. Better spruce up your act if you want to stick around. Okay? Or we'll sick the little white dog onto you - he just lives down the road from you. 我们要纵狗去咬过你,好吧?

Interesting - I also heard that these Chinese sites are financially insecure. Must be rumour-mongering. Do you have a page?

The word on the street out here (don't know about Shanghai) is that despite some big stated user numbers, Chinese people won't go for Facebook or other Facebook-like products because of the probability of being blocked at some stage in the future. This uncertainty discourages people from putting a lot of effort into developing their pages. I know the feeling - I put material for two subjects I teach on Yahoo and three weeks from end of term the Yahoo blog (and all of my teaching material plus students work) was blocked.

China's strength relies on a certain degree of sloppiness. :) If it wasn't sloppy it would more easily break.
