March 13, 2008 at 4:11 PMLove the lesson! I'm a Dutch American - living near "Holland, MI". When we talk about "going dutch" it usually only refers to going out with one person from the opposite sex, either as friends or as a date. But when we go out with (grown-up) family members or a group of friends or just one (same sex) friend, we don't even consider that "going dutch". Everyone just figures on picking up their own bill. If someone offers to 请客, many people will gladly say OK!! But someone made a good point earlier - it is really expensive to 请客 in American restaurants. Funny story - strangely enough, going "dutch" would sometimes be preferred when going on (first) dates rather than just letting the guy pay. Case in point - I went out with a (dutch) guy who, when the waiter asked him if he would like a refill on his pop, said "well, do refills cost more"? Yep, about $0.89. Guy says, "Oh, no thanks, I'll just have a water". Waiter asks me next, "would you like a refill?" lol - what's a girl to say? At that point, Guess I should have said, "yes, and by the way, let's AA zhi".

March 6, 2008 at 5:29 PMGarry, lol, I think the lesson isn't "know more than her" but it is "don't try and b.s. her". :-) I'm so excited, I just have to share... Today I think I understood Jenny's story at the end of the lesson about going to the music teacher as a little girl. whoo hoo!!
