September 11, 2012 at 6:55 AMwondering if the tibetan mastiff is the one you're thinking of:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tibetan_Mastiff
...which says of their temperament:
"The few individuals that remain in Tibet are ferocious and aggressive, unpredictable in their behavior, and very difficult to train. But the dogs bred by the English are obedient and attached to their masters."
..or whether it could be another breed, mongrels, or you've seen many breeds

yikes. Do you happen to know what breeds are the most common?

September 11, 2012 at 4:32 AM“this is one part of China that reminds me of Australia”
。。。while it still sounds interesting and I'd like to visit everywhere, for me this would bump it down the list. I guess if you were homesick it may be different..... I want to see quintessentially Chinese stuff and something as different from here is possible is what I'd be most interested in. But it's different for you because you've been living there for some time. What we have in common here is that we're both looking for something different.
"pangolins"
pandas beat pangolins paws down for me. But sure, I can see the appeal of checking out a new and exotic critter.
"虎跳峡, 高路 (Yunnan, Tiger Leaping Gorge, high track)
I've been three times so far and plan another trip - again clear air, sheer rocky snow-capped mountains, and the wilderness. I also enjoy the hospitality at the various houses along the way. "
...this one appeals the most from your list. Sounds awesome.
"I don't go for their dogs though"
...what's the story there?

September 10, 2012 at 11:16 PMIt'd be great to hear Dilu's top 5 also. Weren't you a travel guide Dilu? If so, you may also have some special insights into places that lived up to/exceeded expectations of tourists and those that were a bit of a let down.
