uoyevol,

thanks for that.Sounds like a general doing verb.I see the pattern in that if 开车 means drive a car,it seems that in Chinese often one character is dropped but inferred.谢谢

Thanks Jenny for that and for the other examples.

Does Chinese have equivalent sayings to either ?:

A friend in need is a friend indeed.

朋友需要是真的朋友 [does that make sense?]

or,from Hamlet:

Neither a borrower nor a lender be;

For loan oft loses both itself and friend.

I was wondering about jie4 as in English some get a bit confused between the correct use of lend/loan/borrow.

“遇到点儿麻烦" is a bit of an understatement.Like other addictions recognising the real 麻烦 is the problem.

如果他赢,what if he gets a tip on a sure fire winner before he gets to pay back the 钱明天 ?

Is this how you say gambling addiction?: 赌博瘾

我喜欢 the tone of voice in the last line when the benevolent long lost friend twigs to what's up.

 家强 probably knows a bit of psychology and was only ever after 5000.A bit of doubling up and he'll turn it into 20000 in a flash anyway.

le...jiu pattern is cool;thanks for elaborating.

It's great that words from recent lessons reappear in other lessons such as gan1ga4 尴尬 which was in the recent QW lesson on rang 让.I'm not sure how much this is coincidence because they're reasonably common words and how much is deliberate reinforcement,but as I've noticed it quite a bit I suspect that in many cases it's the latter.Very helpful anyway.

I'm wondering about this sentence from the expansion开点儿 being translated as drive faster.Literally it is shown as to open quickly.That is,how "open" or 开 got translated as drive.I mean if you're in a car and someone is saying something with 快点儿 in it ,it may be implied, but is this like open the throttle or something ?
