December 6, 2008 at 2:29 AMCrossing the bridge noodles 过桥米线 (guò qiáo mĭxiàn). I love a dish with a traditional story behind it;adds to the magic. Here's a pic of that dish:

Amber,
We must have Sun Jiabing on a DA show talking all about his experiences in the Shaolin Temple and wushu in China in general.

December 3, 2008 at 10:47 PMI've been to my local convenience store [where a Chinese guy sometimes works] a couple of times since this lesson so I could say:
麻烦你给我零个袋子
in that way practicing my vocab while remaining environmentally friendly, but alas,he hasn't been there [perhaps he saw the guy with the crazy Mandarin coming ?]

December 3, 2008 at 4:09 AMEven though 三明治 is a transliteration,it still looks right,as the 三 looks like the 3 layers of a sandwich [you might not see this if you are used to Scooby doo monster sandwiches] ,and then you have 明 in the middle and 治 as the bottom layer[heal/heel].
Is gluten free bread widely available in China?

December 3, 2008 at 1:13 AMThanks Amber,Jenny, and Calkins for the "In the mood for love" recommendation.I was at first a little disappointed that it was in Cantonese and not Mandarin ,and found the story a little depressing, but it seemed to me many of the Cantonese words were very similar to Mandarin which was interesting. The acting was top notch ,and the look of the film was beautiful. The Qipao dresses were a standout, worn so elegantly by Maggie Cheung.

December 2, 2008 at 9:49 PMI'd be interested in whether people drink the tap water from the various parts of China, and Taiwan, and feel it is safe.I think many tourists would only drink bottled water.
