You've made a sterling start..now go get some rest good buddy [I didn't realise you were still online and was posting my thread in another post for another time...leave it till then if you ever get the chance...'twasn't overly important anyhow].

Hey Matt,

Did your tv appearance end up on youtube by any chance?

kesirui,

oh right;thanks for explaining. So basically you have 10 to spend and you must spend them wisely but you can retract and vote on something else instead if you deem it more important in the interim.Fair enough.Cheers.

For the benefit of fellow newbie/ellies I have tried to translate edyoungs last post [feel free to correct any mistakes]:

有 you3 ...have

不 bu4...not

明白 ming2bai...clear [understand]

的 de

中文,de Zhong1wen2...chinese written language

也许..ye3xu3...perhaps

我 wo3 ...I

可以...ke3yi4...can

更好...geng4hao3...better

的 de

帮助 bang1zhu4...help

你 ni...you

So basically he's saying:

"For those who can't understand Chinese writing, perhaps I can better assist you"

"looking forward to see John and Jenny's CCTV style broadcast"

...what's the story here ? ..I didn't quite catch it.

Also,I went on the user voice site and voted for improved search feature but noticed the initial limit of 10 votes.I guess I'll have to explore the site to get the gist of what the 10 vote limit is about and when that gets renewed.I voted once to save my votes but I note that I could have spent more votes on the same issue.

Pete,

haha;"all right now".I love the punny introductions;keep 'em coming. They're all good and a great start to the lesson.Yeah,I remember "stop in the name of the law" from American tv shows as a kid but I'll now always think of the cooler "stop in the name of the fa"..I like the sound of that.hehe

dunderklumpen,

Thanks so much for translating the small talk.I appreciate this can involve a lot of work but it really helps you're fellow poddies.

"打法 dǎfǎ/to make a move in a game / play a card."

...great example light.I can see this being used in mah jong also,so could prove a very useful word.

I am very interested in huai_houzi 's good question about whether 法 can be added to any verb which I can't see a reply to unless I've missed it somewhere.A cool character and a great lesson anyway.

japchinman,

If I may shed some light.I think Calkins was not giving a Chinese name for Don,Donald,or Donny ,but rather for your username japchinman, breaking it down into jap ...chin...and man

日  from 日本 for Japan

颗 for chin

人 for man

zao gao 糟糕;I have been waiting for todays podcast and just realised there will be none today as it's usually the day DA comes out;renewed sadness.

oh well;millions of great older lessons in the archive to work through;I'm glad about that...

Just to clarify about 8 八 being lucky because it sounds like fa1...I presume that is 发 as in 发家 ?

btw 恭喜,恭喜。我喜欢喜糖 was my weak attempt at something akin to the English alliteration.Does Chinese have similar literary devices to English? Is there a name for repeating a single character that is found in different words within a sentence?

Thanks Rich,

Yeah;good point.I've heard others refer to it and it sounds like it was popular,so I'm also wondering why it was removed [was it in a site update?] and if there is anywhere to still see/hear it?
